Peaks – Eyam, Monyash

Back in September I spent a couple of days in the Peaks for a road test of the new Durston X mid tent. I parked at the campsite in Monyash and set off from there. The path to Lathkill Dale was literally just over the road from the campsite. The weather had been really hot for the previous few weeks so the riverbeds were all dried up which was a shame. Nonethess it was a pleasant stroll along the dale eventually doubling back via Youlgreave into Monyash. Stopped off for a few jars at the Bulls Head pub before pitching up at the campsite. It’s fair to say the campsite needs some tlc, the toilets and showers were well past their best – not the greatest campsite I’ve ever been to!

For day 2 I packed up and drove across to Eyam – known as the Plague village. Quite an eerie, but interesting place with many plaques commemorating families that perished during the black death. I took a walk out to the boundary stone which marks the spot where residents of Eyam would not cross and to warn visitors not to venture any further. Eyam is well known for being the place that closed ranks to contain the plague and so limit the spread across neighbouring villages. Eyam is definitely well worth a visit.
