Affric Kintail Way

The Affric Kintail Way is a 44 mile route stretching from Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness to Morvich on the west coast of Scotland. The trail takes in the town of Cannich then rises high above Loch Beinn a M’headhoin into the magnificent Glen Affric before finishing in the village of Morvich. This is very much a trail of 2 halves. The first 25 or so miles on tarmac and forestry tracks followed by remote paths into the valleys of Glen Affric. Day 1 – Drumnadrochit to Cannich (13 miles) After my toils on the Snowdonia Way I decided to give … Continue reading Affric Kintail Way

Great Glen Way part 2 – Fort Augustus to Inverness

Day 4 – Fort Augustus to Altsigh It’s a steep climb out of Fort Augustus to start the day and I was certainly glad to have paid for breakfast at Morags beforehand, especially to soak up some of the IPAs from the night before! Once at the top the views start to open up over Loch Ness – it’s a real difference to staring at a canal for hours on end! It was quite misty up top and it quickly closed in so that visibility was pretty poor along the ridge line. Out of the mist I stumbled across a … Continue reading Great Glen Way part 2 – Fort Augustus to Inverness

Great Glen Way – Part 1 Fort William to Fort Augustus

Day 1 – Home to Moy Swing Bridge I bounced out of bed bright and early catching the 6.45am train out of Rugby up to Glasgow, then from Glasgow Queen Street up to Fort William. The Great Glen Way was calling me and frankly I couldn’t wait to get started. The journey up to Fort William was particularly picturesque as the train wound its way across Lochs, hillsides and Rannoch Moor. It was 5:30hrs before I disembarked in Fort William so I was eager to stretch my legs! I’d originally booked a pitch at the Camping and Caravan Park near … Continue reading Great Glen Way – Part 1 Fort William to Fort Augustus

West Highland Way – Part 3 Kingshouse to Fort William

Day 7 – Kingshouse to Kinlochleven Woke up feeling slightly worse for wear so was slow going packing up my gear and getting moving this morning! It was a misty start which made a pleasant change from the stifling heat of the past few days. Who would have thought the heat would be my main concern in Scotland! The path was easy to follow along the line of the old military road to the start of the ‘Devil’s Staircase’. It was a difficult climb made even more so by the swarms of midges that gathered on me every time I … Continue reading West Highland Way – Part 3 Kingshouse to Fort William

West Highland Way – Part 2 Beinglas Farm to Kingshouse

Day 4 – Beinglas Farm to Tyndrum The shop at Beinglas opens at 0730hrs so I was first in the queue eager to get going with some supplies on board. I’d snapped one of my trekking poles on the tree roots section the previous day so as well as having a strangely lopsided trekking pole Lanshan tent the night before, I needed to source a replacement from Tyndrum. I’d not really used 2 trekking poles before this trip but after 3 days walking it now seemed alien without 1 of them. It was hot today, really hot and was due … Continue reading West Highland Way – Part 2 Beinglas Farm to Kingshouse

West Highland Way – Part 1 Milngavie to Beinglas Farm

Day 1 – Milngavie to Conic Hill I’d been planning to walk the West Highland Way for some time, I’d watched countless YouTube videos, read the guide book, bought the map and set out my itinerary. To say I was excited is a massive understatement! I arrived into Glasgow late on Friday night, a day earlier than planned due to engineering works scheduled for the following day. This meant I was able to get an early start the following morning. A quick train from Glasgow Queen Street to Milngavie, followed by a swift coffee and bacon roll at Costa and … Continue reading West Highland Way – Part 1 Milngavie to Beinglas Farm
